About the work

During a visit to my family’s home in the countryside, I came across my father’s notebook. On the cover was the plain title *Farming Journal*, but inside, alongside records of when he had fertilised and pruned the trees, were passages filled with his tender care for the mountain. On one spring day, he wrote: “The grass had grown thick, so I cleared it. When I turned around, our mountain was filled with the soft green of new leaves. To others, it may be an ordinary sight, but it is a landscape I could look at all my life—one that comes to mind whenever I close my eyes, and that I will always want to see again.” Perhaps it was from walking up and down the mountain my father had tended that I, too, came to love the mountains. I usually take a walk around the mountain behind my home in the morning, and sometimes I gather plants, wanting to keep the beauty of the season close to me. I have sealed within this work plants I gathered myself: spirea blossoms from my father’s mountain in 2021; dawn redwood leaves from the Ansan Jarak-gil trail in Seoul in April 2023; a flower from an April whose name and place of origin I have forgotten; and a dried foxtail that was rolling outside my studio in November 2025. I dream of living—and dying—as naturally as the mountains and fields.

SEOUL · b. 1983

The artist carves wood into gentle, softly formed sculptures. Having previously worked as a magazine journalist and publishing editor, writing articles and making books, she found a connection between the editorial process of shaping stories through words and sentences and the act of carving a meaningful form from an ambiguous mass. Her sculptures begin with a story that forms the foundation of each work, which she then expresses through form. Drawing primarily on scenes from memory, she sculpts living beings such as animals and people, guided by the idea of giving wood a new life and story. She embraces the marks and scars in the wood as part of each work, sometimes collecting driftwood washed ashore or discarded pieces of timber. Grounded in respect for life and an ecological perspective, her practice continues to evolve.
