The artist carves wood into gentle, softly formed sculptures. Having previously worked as a magazine journalist and publishing editor, writing articles and making books, she found a connection between the editorial process of shaping stories through words and sentences and the act of carving a meaningful form from an ambiguous mass. Her sculptures begin with a story that forms the foundation of each work, which she then expresses through form. Drawing primarily on scenes from memory, she sculpts living beings such as animals and people, guided by the idea of giving wood a new life and story. She embraces the marks and scars in the wood as part of each work, sometimes collecting driftwood washed ashore or discarded pieces of timber. Grounded in respect for life and an ecological perspective, her practice continues to evolve.
