About the work

Thanks to algorithms that seem remarkably adept at serving up content tailored to my interests, animal-related stories often appear on my social media feeds and YouTube. Recently, I have come across a series of videos showing wild animals—such as martens, otters and badgers—spotted near urban areas. I find myself replaying the videos, charmed by how adorable they are. Yet I also feel a sense of sorrow as I realise that, through our relentless construction and destruction, humans have transformed the natural world into a place where these animals can no longer easily live apart from us, in safe and abundant mountain habitats suited to their ways of life. Hoping that it might inhabit a safe world of its own, I created an otter living freely.

SEOUL · b. 1983

The artist carves wood into gentle, softly formed sculptures. Having previously worked as a magazine journalist and publishing editor, writing articles and making books, she found a connection between the editorial process of shaping stories through words and sentences and the act of carving a meaningful form from an ambiguous mass. Her sculptures begin with a story that forms the foundation of each work, which she then expresses through form. Drawing primarily on scenes from memory, she sculpts living beings such as animals and people, guided by the idea of giving wood a new life and story. She embraces the marks and scars in the wood as part of each work, sometimes collecting driftwood washed ashore or discarded pieces of timber. Grounded in respect for life and an ecological perspective, her practice continues to evolve.
