Where does evil originate, and how does it continue to exist? Why do acts of evil generate endless excuses? We often hear the justification that something began with good intentions but somehow, inevitably, became evil. In the present moment, often described as an age of hatred, acts of evil disguised as goodwill become entangled with those who are seduced by their justifications, creating an endless cycle of chaos. Even things that appear perfectly clear can be transformed into something else through elaborate excuses. This is not because people are simply ignorant, but because misguided beliefs can possess tremendous power. At first glance, this may resemble a black comedy, yet there is nothing amusing about it. History repeatedly reproduces these stained realities in the name of progress. Is this truly progress, or is it regression? Goodness exists without the need for excuses. The endless repetition of tainted justifications and hollow words only reveals greed. At times, I feel as though I am living in a monster garden—a place where monsters have been gathered together for display. Surrounded by grotesque beings, unable even to let out a single scream, I remain silent and wait for this strange dream to end.

Sung Byunghee explores the intersection between personal anxiety and wounds and the tensions that arise within contemporary society. For Sung, art is not a form of consolation that conceals or softens pain, but a sharp tool that compels both the artist and the viewer to confront it directly. Rather than relying on literal representation, she constructs her paintings through symbols and metaphors, bringing together existential anxiety, the uncertainty of life, and the instability generated by social conditions. Beginning with deeply personal emotions and experiences, Sung expands them into a broader visual language that invites viewers to face their own wounds and, through that encounter, find the possibility of moving forward.
