Sunhotan is an artist who bases his work on the technique of ‘collage.’ He utilizes various forms of standardized ready-made products produced in modern capitalist society, focusing on how these mass-produced items acquire individual narratives through personal consumption, ultimately forming unique meanings in the process. Furthermore, he interprets the most fundamental human desire as the "desire for existence" and considers "consumption" to be the most rational means of expressing this desire within modern capitalist society. Based on this idea, he explores consumption from an aesthetic-philosophical perspective and reinterprets its meaning through his artwork. Building on these concepts, he continues to complete his works by transforming and reconstructing ready-made and mass-produced objects, utilizing the technique of collage.

INSPIRATION
While creating this piece, I kept questioning whether it was okay to do so, but the courage I gained from Marcel Duchamp, Andy Warhol, and Virgil Abloh pushed me forward. So, I just went for it. MoMA is a symbol of contemporary art and modern artistic values. At the same time, it compiles and sells books containing its collection of iconic modern and contemporary artworks. I once purchased a MoMA archival book expansion pack, which was essentially a collection of printed images. I thought of it as the ultimate value-for-money experience for those who couldn’t visit MoMA in person. When I asked ChatGPT how to say "가성비" in English, it told me: "Value for money." That’s how the title of this piece came to be—I simply replaced "Money" with "Art.” While making this, I realized that while MoMA freely mass-produces these books as they own the original works, the artists themselves might not have explicitly granted permission for such reproductions. That thought made me feel a little less guilty about creating this work.

Design Concept
Since I wanted to explore the idea of value-for-money in art, I collaged images of artworks that represent the essence of contemporary art. Alongside them, I attached information from MoMA’s archival book, just as it appeared in the publication. As I went through these details, I realized that most of the featured works were created 60 to 70 years ago, which surprised me. These pieces, once considered the pinnacle of postmodernism, now seem even more historical. To emphasize the idea of ultimate value-for-money, I used an empty Bear brick packaging insert as a frame for these collaged artworks. Bear brick figures often feature collaborations with artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, and Keith Haring, making them a fitting metaphor for contemporary art’s accessibility and commercialization.

MATERIALS USED
Discussing the concept naturally leads to explaining the materials. First, I legally purchased a MoMA archival book, cut out images from it, and attached them to the work. Behind the Bear-brick insert, I used papers containing the contact information and addresses of galleries that participated in Frieze Art Fair worldwide. These were cut out from international art magazines that I had personally collected from Frieze fairs.


CDA is a gallery stands for ‘Creative’, ‘Discovery’, and ‘Appreciation’. The gallery mainly presents creative activities in various fields of contemporary visual arts in the form of exhibitions. CDA exhibition mainly focuses on paintings but subjects to all kinds of genres and mediums such as sculpture, prints, photography, animation, and video. The form of the exhibitions is also balanced, with a mix of solo and group exhibitions, as well as art fairs and collaborative projects. We sincerely hope that our activities will serve as a spark for the realization of meaningful projects for creators(artists) and an opportunity for audiences to expand their inspiration and collecting.

Value For Art

A lucky letter has arrived for you. You may have heard the legend of the chain letter that begins like this:

"This letter first originated in England and has traveled around the world, bringing luck to those who received it. Now, it has been passed on to you..."

While it claims to bring luck, it actually contains some rather suspicious elements:

"You must send seven copies to others within four days." → This carries a phishing scam-like nuance.
"President J.F. Kennedy of the United States received this letter but ignored it, and nine days later, he was assassinated." → This includes fear-inducing, scam-like elements.
In a way, it can be considered one of the earliest forms of spam mail.

However, the letter you have now has been stripped of all these elements, leaving only pure luck for you. It has simply cleared customs through JFK Airport, named after the former president, and has been infused with all kinds of lucky charms, from lucky $2 bills to lucky Biki. This letter was created with the concept that the very act of wishing for luck and passing it on is, in itself, a continuous cycle of consuming luck.

Lucky symbols from both Eastern and Western cultures were collaged together, and a setting was established where "the letter originally started in England but made a stop in the United States along the way." This provided a rationale—somewhat—for attaching a $2 bill. Thus, a stamp featuring Queen Elizabeth of England was affixed, and elements resembling an entry declaration form were included to reinforce the concept that the letter had passed through customs smoothly. To enhance immersion, a USPS (United States Postal Service) international package was used.

Lucky Chain Letter

Creation Motive
I believe that, except for a very few, everyone has experienced their "first love" at some point. Although the timing may differ slightly for each person, the essence of that memory remains the same, carefully stored in a corner of the heart. Even after decades, people continue to reminisce about their first love and the excitement of those early feelings, consuming related narratives and media. The fact that first love is still widely consumed today suggests that it is ultimately a reflection of our longing for it. With this in mind, I created this piece.

Design Concept
To capture the essence of first love, I collaged two works that best represent it:
- Love Letter (1994), directed by Shunji Iwai
F- irst Love (1999), the debut album of Hikaru Utada
I combined these two works as their core messages revolve around the nostalgia of first love. Love Letter is set in the city of Otaru, Hokkaido, and coincidentally, the First Love album included in the collage was a gift from a friend who bought it while traveling in Hokkaido. I left the background as the original white panel to symbolize the pure, snowy landscapes of Hokkaido.

Materials Used
The Love Letter elements used in this artwork are from an actual DVD released in Korea in 1999. Both the case and CD were separated and affixed individually. Likewise, Hikaru Utada’s First Love album case and CD were also divided and arranged separately. Additionally, a pencil and eraser were included to reinforce the metaphor of a love letter as an actual handwritten letter, enhancing the immersion of the concept.
