About the work

Jeon So-young’s paintings do not begin with the mere depiction of a specific place or object. Instead, they are traces of sensations experienced with the whole body and layers of imagery left behind at the moment of encounter. The roughness of a tree trunk, the brush of the wind, and the shifting daily temperature and humidity—these sensations seep beyond sight into the skin and breath. The artist accumulates these experiences on the canvas through multiple layers of paint, transforming the landscape from something to be 'seen' into something to be 'touched and read' through overlapping colors and textures. The 'Water_Stream' series focuses on the stream as a site where the surface and the interior intersect. Flowing water reflects light while simultaneously revealing the depths beneath. In this moment, where the seen and the unseen meet within a single gaze, the translucent yet deep surface evokes the duality of life. Here, the visible and the invisible, the momentary and the continuous, constantly cross paths. By bringing us face-to-face with the often-overlooked sensations—the temperature of the wind, the grain of the water, and the breath of plants, Jeon So-young’s work reawakens the vibration of being alive. It is a quiet invitation for that vibration to meet the viewer’s own memories and evolve into yet another grain of connection.

Soyoung Jeon brings onto the canvas plants she has grown and tended herself, as well as subjects and landscapes encountered repeatedly over days of daily walks. For her, “to see” is not merely to register visual information, but to engage in a synesthetic experience accompanied by the texture of surfaces, the volume of air, and even the scent of the wind. Through the accumulation of such sensations, she turns her attention to the layers of time formed in relation to her subjects, that is, to “relationship.” The beings she has met again and again, listening closely to what they seem to say, are often small, fragile, and easily overlooked. Yet she believes that these ordinary and delicate presences ultimately sustain herself, the world, and one another. The plants in her paintings are not simple representations of nature, but traces of relationships built over time and spaces in which the sensation of “aliveness” is quietly questioned. She reflects on the idea that to be alive also implies moving toward death. Just as blooming and withering coexist within a single plant, her paintings hold together states of emergence and disappearance. Infusing the picture plane with the sensibilities she has learned through nature, she continues painting as a gesture of closely touching the world.

We also provide collection consulting for individuals and companies, artwork rentals, and art-based archiving services.  At GHF Gallery in Gye-dong, we support artists through curated exhibitions and aim to foster a culture where art can be appreciated and collected by everyone.   Our mission is to make artwork more accessible and to contribute to a vibrant art market. We believe that through art, everyone can become good friends.  In the spirit of our name, Golden Hands—meaning “hands that save not only myself, but also those around me”—we hope the work we do lives up to what we stand for.
