About the work

Jonghwan Jin's work is grounded in his subjective emotions and experiences, building upon layers of collected video and audio recordings to progress into a new painting enterprise. The role of chance perception in the manifestation of creativity is significant, and his uniqueness lies in transforming intangible elements like scents and sounds into his own formal symbols. This process evolves as an artist’s encounters with nature spontaneously generate numerous chances, further transforming them into inevitabilities. While the subjects an artist encounters may be products of chance, through his work, he infuses these coincidences with plausibility, adding his own emotions and visions to mold them into objects of inevitability.

Jonghwan Jin
Pohang, South Korea · b. 1991

Jonghwan Jin is currently living and working in Seoul, South Korea, where his work is based on painting. He continues to think about the possibilities of expression within the category of painting. He develops abstractions of the invisible but slowly changing landscapes, such as the temperature, humidity, and wind direction felt when welcoming a new season. By implicitly expressing the forms of sensation that exist beyond the visible visual image, he is searching for his painting style.
