About the work

The work is composed of multiple panels placed side by side, forming a continuous visual flow. While each image exists independently, together they create relationships of form and direction. The spaces between the panels do not function as breaks, but rather as points where the gaze pauses or transitions. The imagery is based on close-up views of a bird-of-paradise, yet the full form is never revealed. Instead, only fragments or sectional surfaces remain. The form does not appear all at once, but is divided into partial planes and directional flows—elongated surfaces, finely split edges, and sharply tapering ends that extend in different directions. Smooth areas coexist with textured surfaces, creating a dual sensation that feels both solid and organic, almost like tissue. Each panel shares the same subject but emphasizes a different focal area, and the images are not perfectly aligned but slightly offset from one another. The work uses anatomical terms of bird wings—such as Primary, Covert, Tertial, Secondary, and Remex—as subtitles. These terms do not describe the image directly, but function as a language that points to structure. Ultimately, rather than presenting a single unified image, the work guides the viewer’s gaze across the flow and texture formed between the panels, revealing a sensory experience in which connection and disjunction continuously alternate.

JiHyun Im explores painting through the close observation and magnification of plant surfaces. Seen at close range, the plant no longer appears as a single, unified form, but unfolds into layered strata, splitting grains, and flows of diffused color—separate yet continuous, forming a single mass. Through this, the plant is perceived not as a specific subject, but as a structure that generates sensation. The diffusion of red hues, smooth gloss, and dry, cracking textures evoke the surface of skin or internal tissue, revealing moments where form shifts into another mode of perception. Rather than reproducing the subject, the work follows the sensations that emerge through proximity, constructing the image by leaving or removing fragments of form. What matters is not what is depicted, but what kind of sensation is produced on the surface. The pictorial surface is treated like a kind of skin, where accumulated and abraded layers, permeating color, and traces of gloss and dryness overlap to form an organic structure. This surface does not remain fixed as an image, but persists in a state of continual change. Ultimately, the work does not aim to represent a specific subject, but explores the threshold between the moment just before form is recognized and the point at which it begins to dissolve, drawing attention to where the familiar becomes unfamiliar.
