The work begins with the question of how early childhood memories—often difficult to recall—along with the anxieties of youth and adolescence, are actualized within present-day reality. Personal emotions are shaped through the structures of environment and society, and these sensibilities are reconfigured in painting through a cyclical relationship between memory, reality, and image. Within this process, “night” functions as a key device. Initially understood as a temporal concept, it gradually expands into a filter that situates images between reality and fantasy, eventually becoming a “place” in itself. Recurrent nocturnal landscapes—marshes, gardens, beaches, forests, and cliffs—begin to form loose narrative connections, ultimately operating like an internal map constructed by the artist. The figures in the paintings appear as anonymous presences, with faces and expressions deliberately omitted. They are often depicted walking alone, without human companions. Instead, a white, bird-like form appears alongside them—an entity of transformation that shifts in meaning depending on the scene and is perceived differently according to the viewer’s emotional response. Rather than being expressed through the figures, emotion is projected onto the surrounding environment, where elements such as foliage, sky, and waves function as carriers of affect. The artist builds each surface through thin, transparent layers, evoking sensory experiences beyond the visual—such as sound, smell, and touch—through color and form. In recent works, the focus has expanded into the interior of the studio, where tools, objects, and images intersect, forming another “world of night.”

Born in Seoul in 1988, Jaeyeon Yoo received her B.A. in Western Painting from Ewha Womans University and her M.F.A. in Painting from the Royal College of Art, UK, and has been working between Seoul and London. She builds landscapes in which everyday life and fantasy coexist, focusing on the time and place of 'night' to unravel the large and small events of everyday life and the individual's imagination and thoughts that originate from these events. She expresses the ambivalent aspects of the world in her paintings by nostalgically visualizing her childhood experiences and memories, and introducing disturbing situations or unclear objects. Through the subtle emotions generated by private memories and fantasies, she aims to draw attention to the 'gap' between the dual worlds of society and the individual, past and present, phenomenon and reality, fear and dream, inner and outer, existence and perception, etc. The work Night Walker expresses a dual state of isolation and freedom through the depiction of the landscape of the "blue night," sensed via the light that manifests in the darkness—such as the moon, meteor showers, and the screen of a mobile phone. It captures the figure of a solitary night walker on a late-night stroll.
