About the work

The work unfolds the process through which life continues and expands, rooted in the love and passage of time shaped within the relationship between parent and child. For the artist, the tree signifies the parent, while the flower represents the child. Originating from the parent, a being takes root, extends its stem, and eventually blossoms; yet this passage of time remains largely imperceptible. Beginning from the notion of “reaping what has been sown,” the work reflects on time as it accumulates and circulates within familial bonds. Fine lines spread across the surface, evoking the veins of leaves as they branch out and reconnect. Like blood vessels flowing beneath the skin, they form an invisible current, suggesting the continuity and interconnectedness inherent in relationships. Love that begins with the parent returns or extends outward, lingering and accumulating within each other. Colors that seep and permeate into the hanji build up in layers, gradually diffusing across the surface. This process itself becomes a trace of time’s accumulation. Such transformations, unfolding upon a fragile ground, resonate with the persistence of life. This body of work focuses not on full bloom, but on the moment just before—when a bud begins to open—delicately capturing the time of growth and change that passes almost unnoticed.

Bo Kim
Seoul · b. 1994

Bo Kim (b. 1994) is an artist currently based in South Korea, who earned a degree in Painting (BFA) from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in the United States. Bo explores the aesthetics of “impermanence” observed in the gap between nature and humanity. Based on the understanding that all relationships—among humans, nature, and objects—exist in a constant state of flux rather than permanence, the artist visualizes specific moments while embracing the passage of time. Similar to journaling a significant day, Bo translates personal memories and thoughts into her work. This creative act can be seen as an attempt to remember, record, and deeply embody the form and meaning inherent in fleeting moments within the flow of time. In this process, Bo utilizes materials from nature such as sand, hanji (traditional Korean paper), and flowers. For Bo, the act of creation is not merely about making something; rather, it is a process of sensing and understanding the impermanent nature of time that transcends both nature and humanity through these natural materials.
