Soyoung Seo
Soyoung Seo (b. 1994, Seoul, South Korea) studied Visual Communication Design and worked as a graphic designer before expanding her practice into painting. Since her first solo exhibition, Observe, she has participated in exhibitions and art fairs in Korea and abroad, including Urban Break, Art Jakarta, and The Preview Art Fair. Her work repeatedly features girl figures reminiscent of 1990s Japanese animation. Combining figures characterized by flat planes of color and crisp outlines with mechanical bodies, interfaces, typography, and graphic imagery evoking data and signals, Seo has developed a distinctive painterly language. Her practice begins with questions about how human identity is formed and transformed. While her earlier works focused on the inner world of the individual, including emotions and the unconscious, her recent practice examines how technology intervenes in human perception and behavior, reshaping identity in the process. Moving between the visual languages of design and painting, Seo explores changing forms of the human through the bodies and images of girls in an environment where the boundaries between humans and technology are increasingly blurred.
