작품 설명

In Buddhism, there are two periods each year, one in summer and one in winter, when practitioners withdraw from the outside world and devote themselves to meditation and spiritual practice. These are known as Haan-geo, the summer retreat, and Dongan-geo, the winter retreat. The latter lasts from the fifteenth day of the tenth lunar month to the fifteenth day of the first lunar month of the following year. Whenever I become absorbed in my work, I feel as though I am entering a winter retreat. Dare I say that carving wood day after day does not feel so different from spending entire days facing a wall in silence, devoted to meditation? Of course, there is a difference. On the day the retreat ends, the face of a monk who has spent months in meditation is clear and serene, while mine grows increasingly dull and weary from work. Even so, I feel the two are connected by a sincere effort to transcend suffering and reach nirvana.

SOOBIN LEE
SEOUL · b. 1983

The artist carves wood into gentle, softly formed sculptures. Having previously worked as a magazine journalist and publishing editor, writing articles and making books, she found a connection between the editorial process of shaping stories through words and sentences and the act of carving a meaningful form from an ambiguous mass. Her sculptures begin with a story that forms the foundation of each work, which she then expresses through form. Drawing primarily on scenes from memory, she sculpts living beings such as animals and people, guided by the idea of giving wood a new life and story. She embraces the marks and scars in the wood as part of each work, sometimes collecting driftwood washed ashore or discarded pieces of timber. Grounded in respect for life and an ecological perspective, her practice continues to evolve.
