작품 설명

A figure looks at a cow he has raised. Nothing dramatic is taking place, yet the scene conveys a quiet bond shaped by familiarity and time. The meaning of his gaze remains open: it may suggest affection, responsibility, care, or simply an awareness that their lives have become connected. Presented on a large-scale canvas measuring 220 × 165 cm, this calm moment evokes the many kinds of relationships that shape our lives, as well as the ordinary experiences through which those relationships are formed. Looking after someone, taking responsibility, relying on one another, and simply being present are gestures that often build connection gradually, through repetition rather than extraordinary events. Müller’s images begin with his own experiences and memories, but they do not remain confined to personal recollection. Through the slow process of painting, these images are carefully distilled and opened outward, allowing viewers to bring their own memories and experiences into the work. No particular knowledge is required to encounter this painting. Instead, it asks for something that has become increasingly scarce: time. The longer our gaze remains, the more the familiar scene begins to reveal. We become less concerned with what the figure is doing and more attentive to how he looks at the other being, and to the emotions and history that may be held within that gaze. The time once shared between the two figures, the time the artist spent returning to that memory and translating it into paint, and the time we spend standing before the work all meet within a single image. As these different durations overlap, an ordinary scene slowly unfolds, allowing a once-precious moment to remain suspended within the painting. In this way, the meanings of relationship and memory continue to take shape through each viewer’s own experience.

Ruben Müller
Ruben Müller
Mönchengladbach · b. 1990

Ruben Müller (b. 1990, Mönchengladbach, Germany) is a Dresden-based painter whose work explores memory, human relationships, and the quiet tension within everyday moments. Drawing from personal photographs, lived experiences, and references to art history, Müller transforms familiar scenes into psychologically charged spaces that feel both intimate and slightly uncanny. His paintings often depict anonymous figures, animals, and domestic or natural settings, leaving the narrative intentionally open. Through restrained color, carefully constructed compositions, and a sense of stillness, Müller invites viewers to project their own memories and emotions onto the image.
